What Is an Allergist-Immunologist?
An allergist-immunologist is a medical doctor who has finished at least 4 years of medical school, 3 or more years of residency training in a primary specialty, and at least 2 more years of additional training in Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
Allergist-Immunologists are trained to diagnose and treat general medical problems, but specialize in treating allergic and immunologic disorders. They are able to order, perform, and interpret tests and prescribe specific treatments.
Although allergist-immunologists treat many kinds of disorders, some of the more common ones that you may be familiar with include asthma, allergic rhinitis, pollen and pet allergies, food allergies, reactions to antibiotics and other drugs, chronic hives (urticaria), and insect venom allergies.
A board-certified Allergist-Immunologist typically refers to a doctor that has met specific education requirements and passed a rigorous board examination given by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI)
